Visit with Becky Kamp

On Friday, January 29, 2016, our second graders led by Mrs. Gale Jadyk and Mrs. Reana Booker of Wharton School were visited by Becky Kamp and her guide dog, Sera.  Becky came to visit as our culminating activity after we had completed a lesson while reading a story on Helen Keller, who was deaf and blind.  Becky was able to share valuable information on the variety of safety precautions that a blind person of today must follow; the imperative training that a guided dog must obtain in order to fully serve their person; the impact and assistance that technology has to offer a person who has lost their vision; information on how she uses her other stronger senses to guide her throughout the day; as well as the realization that a blind person can accomplish things we can-just in a different way.  Becky Kamp’s visit was a valuable real-world experience that our students can hold as a lifelong memory of Wharton School.
